Issues in the Information Society        In the emergence of knowledge societies accelerated by rapid technological advances,both hopes and fears have been expressed. Of course the potential of the new technologies to represent the full diversity of knowledge and provide access to disseminate knowledge is something that is widely accepted. There are issues,however, such as privacy, social justice, peace and sustainable development.Clearly the benefits of living in knowledge-intensive societies are not equally felt by all sections of the society.         Knowledge has been at the heart of growth and development since time  immemorial. Swiss Standards for Information Literacy   The Swiss standards and the associated competency grid enable consistent placement and promotion of IL at the various universities. They provide guidance in the design of courses and course offerings and enable the development of compatible university cross-training concepts. These standards support the collaboration between library staff and faculty of various disciplines and facilitate agreements between libraries and university administration. Information is available through libraries, community resources, special interest organizations, media, and the Internet--and increasingly, information comes to individuals in unfiltered formats, raising questions about its authenticity, validity, and reliability. पुस्तके मानवाचे चांगले मित्र असतात आणि ते जीवनाच्या शेवटपर्यंत साथ देतात. आजच्या युगात तर ग्रंथालयाचे महत्त्व फार वाढले आहे. सार्वजनिक ग्रंथालय, शैक्षणिक ग्रंथालय, व्यावसायिक ग्रंथालय अशा प्रकारे ग्रंथालय समाजात आढळतात. पारंपरिक ग्रंथालयापासून आजच्या ऑटोमेशन, यांत्रिकी, डिजिटल व व्हर्च्युअल ग्रंथालयापर्यंत विकास झालेला आहे. आजच्या वेळेला वाचकांची गरज ओळखून योग्य वेळेत ती सेवा पूर्ण करणे हेच ग्रंथालयाचे मुख्य ध्येय आहे. डॉ. एस. आर. रंगनाथन यांना भारतीय ग्रंथालय शास्त्राचे जनक मानले जाते. यांचा वाढदिवस देशात ‘राष्ट्रीय ग्रंथपाल दिवस’ म्हणून साजरा केला जातो. ग्रंथालयाचा प्रत्येक विभागावर डॉ. एस. आर. रंगनाथन यांनी खूप बारकाईने काम करून अतुलनीय योगदान दिले आहे आणि डॉ. एस. आर. रंगनाथन यांनी सांगितलेले ग्रंथालयशास्त्राचे पाच नियम (लॉ) ग्रंथालयात प्रत्यक्षात योग्यपणे उतरवणे हीच डॉ. एस. आर. रंगनाथन यांना सर्वोत्तम मानवंदना ही ठरेल.

विश्वस्तरीय पुस्तकालय बनाने हेतु पर्याप्त निधी व उच्चशिक्षीत तज्ञ कर्मचारीयो की आवश्यकता  है इस सेवामे सबसे मनाया जाता ह   पुस्तके मानवी जीवन का अभिन्न अंग है वह जीवन के हर पल मे यह साथ निभाती है। पुस्तकालय आज के युग मे बहुत उन्नत हुए है घर बैठे इंटरनेट द्वारा एक क्लिक पर पुस्तके, नियतकालिकाए, हस्तलिखीत व दुर्लभ ग्रंथ अन्य दस्तावेज उपलब्ध होते है इस सेवा मे सबसे महत्वपुर्ण रोल पुस्तकालयाध्यक्ष का है जिसके द्वारा यह जरूरी सेवाएं प्राप्त होती है। पुस्तकालयो का स्वरूप लगातर बदल रहा है उसी रूप मे पुस्तकालयाध्यक्ष की भूमिका भी बदल रही है, आज यांत्रीकी, डिजीटल व व्हर्चुअल पुस्तकालयो का दौर है इसीलिए पाठको तक उन्नत सेवाएं प्रदान करने की जिम्मेदारी भी पुस्तकालयाध्यक्ष की बढ गयी है। हर वर्ष 14-20 नवंबर को पुरे देश मे “राष्ट्रिय पुस्तकालय सप्ताह” के रूप मे मनाया जाता है। पुस्तकालयो मे कर्मचारीयो की भारी कमीः- समाज मे शैक्षणिक, व्यावसायीक, सार्वजनीक, विशेष विषय संबंधित जैसे अनेक पुस्तकालय मौजूद है लेकीन इनमे से कुछ प्रतिशत ही पुस्तकालय अपने ध्येय व उद्देश ...
